Born from the Academy
Dancehall and its component sub-genres have detailed technical frameworks, like other classical dance forms. It's often described as the strongest for technical development for multi-style dancers.
Every Tuesday starting July, Chuby takes dancers through an intensive 30 minutes before the Chuby Dice Series, isolating and drilling the movement principles that underpin Dancehall. These techniques are then immediately applied at Series.
Dancehall technique is traditionally forged in crews, gruelling daily training sessions and the Dancehall party circuit, which famously makes and breaks musicians' & dancers' careers. But people can't typically afford to travel to Jamaica to train at this intensity.
Priced at a discounted rate, Technique Tuesdays is a must-do class for every serious, committed, growing dancer looking to refine their craft over the longer term.
Dancehall Academy's emerging technical framework
Develop & drive movement from the ground, with a focus on feet, to knees, to pelvis. Train groundedness, committed weight transfer, height, lower-body drive and the strength required to sustain authentic Dancehall movement.
Build the Dancehall "bunx" through the body. Develop fluid body flow with clean and strong posture, intent & articulation, not just flow. Strengthen spinal movement, different pelvic movements, chest, ribs, shoulders and head: many of these movements underpin Afro-Latin styles today.
Understand how Jamaican riddims, Patois phrasing and musical structure shape movement texture & expression.
With follow-through, develop confidence and intention until technique becomes second nature.
Reserve your spot for Technique Tuesdays. Spaces are limited: 6:30–7:00pm, every Tuesday, right before Series.
